Remembrance Sunday 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, and Eastbourne’s service is at the War Memorial on Memorial Roundabout, at the top of Devonshire Place. The two minutes’ silence is at 11am, as it is everywhere. What is worth knowing locally is that the morning starts more than half an hour earlier, with two separate parades converging on the memorial.

The 2026 arrangements have not been published yet. Nothing appears on the councils’ site, and Visit Eastbourne’s listing for the service is still marked as passed, meaning it holds last year’s detail. That is normal for early September: the release usually lands in the last week of October. The timings below are the ones Eastbourne has used year after year, and we will replace them with the 2026 confirmation as soon as it is out.

Eastbourne Borough Council’s tourism arm described the same morning in more detail last year: representatives from the military, ex-service personnel, emergency services and other organisations processing from the Terminus Road precinct at 10.25am along Cornfield Road, joined at the memorial by the Mayor of Eastbourne and the Deputy Lieutenant of East Sussex, with music from the Eastbourne Citadel Salvation Army Band and the Scottish Pipe Band, and the commemoration closing with ex-military personnel continuing past the memorial via South Street.

Road closures

The council said last year that road closures were in place between 10am and 1pm to allow the parade to run. It did not name the roads, and it has not published anything for 2026 yet.

The streets involved are obvious from the route: Cornfield Road between Bankers Corner and the memorial, the memorial roundabout itself where South Street, Devonshire Place and Cornfield Road meet, and South Street for the closing parade. Grove Road and the Town Hall approach carry the civic parade from 10.30am.

If you are driving into the town centre that morning, treat the whole block between Terminus Road and the Town Hall as unavailable until early afternoon. Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November

Eastbourne marks the eleventh separately from Remembrance Sunday. In recent years the service has been at 10.40am at the War Memorial Houses in Victoria Drive, attended by the Mayor of Eastbourne. The houses were funded by Eastbourne residents at the end of the Second World War as a tribute to those killed or injured, and are still homes for ex-service personnel with medical disabilities and their families.

In 2026 Armistice Day is a Wednesday. No time has been published for it yet.

The memorial itself

Eastbourne’s war memorial is a Grade II listed monument on Memorial Roundabout, South Street, BN21 4QH. Historic England’s list entry records that it was unveiled on 10 November 1920 by General The Lord Horne, and that the sculptor was Henry Charles Fehr, whose bronze Angel of Victory stands on the pedestal with one foot on a wreathed globe.

It carries no names. The bronze plaque on the south face explains why: “THE TRIBUTE OF EASTBOURNE TO HER GALLANT SONS AND DAUGHTERS WHO WERE FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 to 1918. THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED ON OAK TABLETS IN THE TOWN HALL.” Over 1,000 names are on those panels. The memorial was listed on 13 February 2017.

Two plaques were added later, and they are the ones people miss because they face away from the pavement most visitors stand on. A matching bronze plaque on the north face reads “WORLD WAR II” within a wreath, above “THOSE WHO DIED 1939 to 1945 WE WILL REMEMBER THEM”. A third plaque for subsequent conflicts, described by Historic England as mismatched, with a gilded border and wreath, was added on the east side. The pedestal is granite, the sculpture and all three plaques are bronze, and the winged cherubic heads on the top corners and the dolphins below them are part of the original 1920 design.
