Direct daytime trains between Eastbourne and London Victoria return on Monday 12 October, ending four weeks of changing at Haywards Heath. One more week to go, and a weekend with no trains north of Lewes first.

Direct daytime trains between Eastbourne and London Victoria return on Monday 12 October. That ends four weeks in which off-peak passengers have had to change at Haywards Heath.

The rail industry’s incident notice for the route was updated on Wednesday 30 September at 08:48. It now says the temporary timetable “will remain in place until Friday 9 October” and that “the normal timetable will resume from Monday 12 October”.

That is the first firm date passengers have had. A week earlier, on 23 September, the same notice said only that the changes would run until at least mid-October.

What changes on 12 October

From 14 September, on weekdays, there have been no direct London trains between about 9am and 4pm. Southern has run shuttles between Haywards Heath and Eastbourne and between Eastbourne and Ore instead.

The timetable for Monday 12 October already shows the difference. For a late-morning trip to London Victoria:

Departure from Eastbourne Wednesday 7 October Monday 12 October
10:55 or 11:05 10:55, change at Brighton, 2h 16m 11:05, direct, 1h 31m
11:33 Change at Haywards Heath, 1h 55m Direct, 1h 34m

Those times come from the traintimes.org.uk timetable data for the two dates, checked on 3 October. On 12 October the daytime pattern is two direct trains an hour, at about 5 and 33 minutes past, each taking 1h 31m to 1h 35m.

Bar chart of late-morning journey times from Eastbourne to London Victoria. On Wednesday 7 October the 10:55 via Brighton takes 136 minutes and the 11:33 via Haywards Heath takes 115 minutes. On Monday 12 October the direct 11:05 takes 91 minutes and the direct 11:33 takes 94 minutes.

Why the trains were cut

The notice blames the summer. “The record-breaking hot and dry weather over the summer has affected track conditions in some areas,” it says, so temporary speed restrictions have had to stay in place.

Slower trains could not keep to the normal timetable without delays building up through the day. So the industry cut the middle of the day and protected the peaks. The notice says Network Rail’s engineers are working “to lift the speed restrictions on this route as quickly as possible”.

It does not say whether those restrictions have now been lifted, only that the normal timetable resumes.

One more week, and a weekend to plan around

Until Friday 9 October the temporary pattern still applies on weekdays:

  • direct trains to London Victoria run until around 9am
  • from 9am to 4pm, change at Haywards Heath
  • the usual two trains an hour come back with the 16:24 from London Victoria
  • your ticket is valid on other Southern services between Victoria and Haywards Heath

Then there is a weekend closure. On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, Southern’s engineering page says no trains run between Lewes and Three Bridges. Replacement buses run between Three Bridges and Lewes, calling at Haywards Heath and Cooksbridge.

Southern has also given advance notice of a nine-day closure from 13 to 21 February 2027, between Three Bridges and Lewes, Brighton and Hove via Haywards Heath. It says details of buses and diverted trains will follow later this year.

What it is not clear on

Two peak trains have been missing for longer than the daytime service. GTR said on 28 August that the 06:47 Eastbourne to London Bridge and the 17:03 London Bridge to Eastbourne had not run since 22 July. The 30 September notice does not say whether they come back on 12 October as well. We will update this story when the operator says.

What it means for you

If you travel to London in the middle of a weekday, from Monday 12 October you no longer need to change. The late-morning trip to Victoria is about 20 minutes quicker than this week’s best option through Haywards Heath.

If you are going up on the weekend of 10 and 11 October, allow for a bus between Lewes and Three Bridges.

If your journeys have been delayed, you may be able to claim through Delay Repay. Keep your ticket and a note of the journey. Fares, season tickets and the normal timetable are on Eastbourne to London trains. What is happening on the roads is on Eastbourne roadworks this week.
